The African Diaspora Sends Nearly $100 Billion Home — More Than All Foreign Aid Combined

Nearly $100 billion was sent to Africa by its diaspora in 2023, representing about 4% of the continent's GDP — colossal sums that exceed both official development assistance and foreign direct investment combined.

The figures, highlighted at this year's DiaspoBoost Summit in Casablanca, underscore the African diaspora's role as an overlooked financial powerhouse. The summit brought together public officials, entrepreneurs, investors, and diaspora leaders around the question of turning diaspora ties into structured, long-term economic development.

Beyond Remittances

The African Diaspora Investment Symposium 2026, held at Santa Clara University in March, focused on "Bridging Africa and Silicon Valley" — connecting diaspora investors with African startups and infrastructure projects.

Nigeria alone received $21 billion in diaspora remittances, followed by Egypt ($19.5 billion), Morocco ($11 billion), and Ghana ($4.6 billion).

Meanwhile, the U.S. Congress has introduced the African Diaspora and Investment Act, aimed at harnessing the economic power of African and Caribbean communities in the United States to drive investment on the continent.

"The diaspora is not charity — it's capital," said a panelist at the Casablanca summit. "And it's time the financial system treated it that way."
