Benin's Wadagni Wins Presidential Election with Landslide 94% of the Vote

Benin's Finance Minister Romuald Wadagni has won the country's presidential election with 94.27% of valid votes, according to results confirmed by the Constitutional Court on April 17.

The 49-year-old former Deloitte executive and his running mate Mariam Chabi Talata defeated opposition candidate Paul Hounkpè, who received just 5.95% of the vote. Voter turnout was 58.78%.

Context

The lopsided result reflects a political environment that critics say has been deliberately narrowed. Under outgoing President Patrice Talon — who did not seek a third term — Benin's ruling party has systematically restricted political participation through:

  • Exorbitant party registration fees
  • A "certificate of conformity" allowing the ruling party to exclude opposition parties
  • Requirements that candidates gain endorsements from 15% of all MPs and mayors
  • Use of a special anti-terrorism court to prosecute political opponents and journalists

The main opposition party, the Democrats, failed to put forward a candidate entirely and refused to back Hounkpè.

Wadagni is credited with stabilizing Benin's economy during his decade as Finance Minister, but faces pressure to open political space and address growing discontent among opposition voices and civil society groups.
