Ghana Appoints Carlos Queiroz as Black Stars Coach Ahead of 2026 World Cup
The Ghana Football Association has appointed Carlos Queiroz as head coach of the Black Stars ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America.
The 73-year-old Portuguese, who left his role as Oman coach last month after the side failed to qualify, brings vast World Cup experience — this will be his fifth consecutive appearance as a coach at the tournament, having previously led Portugal, Iran, and other nations on the global stage.
Queiroz's career includes stints as assistant manager at Manchester United under Sir Alex Ferguson and head coach of Real Madrid.
The Challenge
Ghana faces a tough Group L draw at the World Cup, alongside England, Croatia, and Panama. The Black Stars will need to hit the ground running in what is a short-term arrangement — the appointment will be re-evaluated after the tournament.
"I am honoured to lead the Black Stars," Queiroz said upon his appointment. "Ghana has a proud World Cup tradition and I look forward to working with these talented players."
Ghana's last World Cup appearance was in 2022 in Qatar, where they were eliminated in the group stage. The country's best result remains a quarter-final run at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
